About CompetentRoofer

HISTORY

The CompetentRoofer scheme was initially created in 2006 by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC). NFRC wanted to create a scheme that brought reputable contractors together with members of the public looking to comply with the relevant Building Regulations for roofing.

As of the 1st October 2010, NFRC gained UK Government authorisation to set-up the only Competent Person Scheme for the roof refurbishment market in England & Wales. CompetentRoofer now has contractors all over England & Wales, who are registering 10,000s roofing projects each year with that number consistently growing.

WHAT IS COMPETENTROOFER?

CompetentRoofer Ltd provides certification to the roofing industry as a Competent Person scheme operator under Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) Building Regulations for the replacement of roof coverings on all roof types.

When 50% or more of the roof is being replaced, it is a legal requirement to notify the Local Authority Building Control (LABC) and comply with the relevant Building Regulations. By following the CompetentRoofer scheme rules, CompetentRoofer registered contractors are authorised to self-certify that their roof refurbishment work complies with the Building Regulations.  The Registered Contractor notifies CompetentRoofer when the work is taking place and once the work has been completed, CompetentRoofer notifies the relevant LABC.

Not only does the CompetentRoofer scheme recognise the skills and competencies of professional Roofing Contractors but the scheme alleviates the hassle, and cost of requiring the involvement of LABC or an Approved Inspector.

HOW TO RECOGNISE A REGISTERED CONTRACTOR

The simplest way to locate your nearest CompetentRoofer contractor (including contact details) is via our postcode search facility.

Contractors registered under the CompetentRoofer scheme are issued with and authorised to use the CompetentRoofer logo. You’ll usually find this on their quotations and other communications. A reputable contractor will always provide written confirmation of the scope of works together with associated costs.

Contractors with membership of the CompetentRoofer scheme have a uniquely numbered membership certificate which are renewed on an annual basis. You can request a copy of this document from your contractor at any time.

If you have any doubts you can call us on 0207 448 3189 or complete the enquiry form.

ACCREDITATION

As part of our Terms of Authorisation we hold ISO 17065 Accreditation, issued by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS). Part of this process is proving that the standard criteria and checks we have in place are sufficiently thorough to prove that contractors registered with us are technically competent, work safely, are financially stable, and have all the relevant paperwork in place. Each year, CompetentRoofer undergoes a robust audit by UKAS.
